Client: North East Wales NHS Trust
The need to update and rationalise the existing rehabilitation facilities within North East Wales resulted in the Trust appointing TACP to design a new 76-bed rehabilitation unit at Wrexham Maelor Hospital, and a new 34-bed unit at Deeside Community Hospital. Both schemes were completed in 2004/2005, and provide modern facilities to cater for North East Wales’ current needs.
The two-storey Wrexham rehabilitation unit was carefully blended with the existing hospital buildings, but is complemented with modern features to create its own distinct identity. It was created with its own entrance and contains its own rehabilitation department, but is also linked back to the existing hospital facilities.
The single-storey 34-bed extension at Deeside Hospital was sympathetically designed to complement the domestic scale of the existing hospital. Both schemes have integrated contemporary artwork, to soften the environment and stimulate both patients and staff.
