Great Crested Newt Survey

Church Village

Client: Glamorgan Engineering Consultancy / Rhondda Cynon Taff Highways Department

Early surveys of ponds within the route corridor of this bypass scheme which is proposed to relieve traffic congestion in the settlements of Church Village, Tonteg, Llantwit Fardre and Efail Isaf north of Cardiff, confirmed the presence of Great Crested Newts (statutorily protected under Schedule 5 of the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 and under the EC Habitats Directive).

TACP undertook a bottle trapping survey, in conjunction with a torchlight survey and egg search to estimate the population size of Great Crested Newts within this area.  In order to provide information for future licence applications.  The surveys strictly followed the guidelines set out in the Great Crested Newt mitigation guidelines (2001) published by English Nature.
