Pedestrian & cycle bridge over the River Usk at Newport

Environmental Statement

Client: Atkins/Alfred McAlpine

TACP was commissioned to co-ordinate and prepare an environmental statement in support of a planning application for  a landmark pedestrian and cyclebridge over the River Usk at Newport, South Wales.  The bridge comprises four stayed masts approximately 67 metres high that form a “derrick crane” type structure.  The scheme is the first major project for Newport Unlimited and is part of a large scheme to re-energise the City Centre encompassing the river frontage.

Screening, scoping and environmental assessment stages were undertaken and potential environmental effects were examined on the following receptors:-

  • human beings (noise & visual impact)
  • wildlife and nature conservation interests
  • land use and movement patterns
  • landscape
  • cultural heritage and archaeology
  • water quality and resources
  • soils, surface water and groundwater
  • transport and traffic
  • policies and plans
