PLAS MYNWYR (THE MINERS’ INSTITUTE)

RHOSLLANERCHRUGOG

Client: Stiwt Arts and Leisure Community Association

A three-phased project of restoration work has been carried out on the Miners’ Institute, known as locally as the ‘Stiwt’. The original building was designed by local Architects F.A. Roberts,  (who later became the founding partner of TACP,) and John Owen. Built between 1924 and 1926 by local miners donating a penny a week during the difficult years of the recession, the Stiwt is now a Grade II Listed Building. In 1976, the building was closed and the extent of dereliction and decay was such that demolition was seriously considered.

During 1992, the practice of TACP became active again with the Stiwt Arts and Leisure Community Association to develop a brief to meet present day community needs.

The interior refurbishment has been a careful combination of restoration and enhancement, ensuring that the original character of the building has been maintained, whilst carrying out modifications that allow the building to function in a modern environment.

With the aid of local charities, European Architectural Heritage, CADW and a National Lottery grant of £2.3 million, the building has been restored to incorporate a 600-seat theatre, cinema, bars, multifunction rooms and facilities for community usage.
