No 1 Dock was opened in July 1889 and Barry Docks became a major port exporting coal until the First World War when the docks went into decline. The gradual demise of the coal trader has resulted in large areas of dereliction and in order to allow redevelopment the land adjacent to No 1 Dock was reclaimed. In 1966 a programme of reclamation work was commenced and implemented over a 12 month period. The reclamation work comprised five major work elements:
